I Let Myself Go

When I first met my husband I was a size 6. When my husband and I got married I was a size 8. Two years later I was a size 10. Flash forward five years later and I was a size 14. That was my breaking point. I was more than double the size I use to be and I could hardly recognize my body anymore. How could I have LET MYSELF GO? At some point I forgot about being healthy, forgot about keeping myself attractive for my husband and forgot about being the good example for my kids to see. Before size 16 became my next option, I knew I had to make a change. Let me say that changing my lifestyle to a healthier one was not easy in the beginning. Finding a balance of what was right for me and what was wrong for me became a headache that would not go away. I have heard it all when it comes to losing weight:

  • “Eat this but not too much”
  • “Running is good, but walking is better”
  • “Carbs is good sometimes, but not all the time”
  • “Count your calories”
  • “Dairy is good, but sometimes it’s bad”
  • “Lose weight fast, but too fast is bad”

What a rollercoaster of a ride trying to find what best worked for me. After reading and talking with my doctor I decided to give myself a break and come up with a plan that I could live with every day and be happy about.

No Guilt Eating

If I just had to have something instead of denying myself (which only made me want it more and more!), I just ate a very small portion of what I liked. For example I love a Quarter Pounder with Cheese from McDonalds. Still do. But, instead of ordering the Quarter Pounder I order the regular Cheeseburger (The burger that comes in a kid meal). Of course I know that the cheeseburger does not come close to the taste of the Quarter Pounder, but it lets me get that itch off my back without a heap of guilt. Its finding that medium that will change your everyday eating habits.

Find something That You Like To Do

Everyone does not enjoy working out at a gym. What you have to do is find something that you like to do. Do you like dancing? Consider getting dancing exercise DVDS or sign up to learn a new style of dance that you have always wanted to try. Make working out as fun and pleasurable as you can make it.

Involve Your Friends And Family

A support system is greatly needed for continuous motivation. Also, working out with your family is a great way for you to spend time together and it incorporates the importance of staying healthy. A win, win for everyone.

Do Not Look For Overnight Changes

I am not saying that you want see a difference overnight, just do not expect it. This was one of the most difficult paths of losing weight that drove me crazy. I wanted to lose in 30 days what it took me over 5 years to gain. This was not very realistic thinking. I had to learn to persevere with patience.
